October 2019: Tax Movers and Shakers

Stay up-to-date with the movers and shakers in the tax sector. Here are the key movements in October 2019:




PwC has appointed Drew Stevenson as Energy Sector Leader succeeding Alan McCrae. Joining the firm in 1989, Stevenson has more than 25 years’ experience of deals and transaction services across a wide range of industries and global territories.

PwC’s David Lewis has joined the London Partnership from PwC Australia. Previously based in Perth, Lewis led PwC Australia’s energy & resources tax practice for three years and the Perth tax practice for two and a half years. Lewis has held senior tax roles also within the oil and gas industry at Exxon Mobil in Perth and Melbourne and Chevron in Perth and California.

Carter Backer Winter has appointed Martina Fitzgerald as a Tax Partner. She is a chartered tax adviser who provides bespoke tax planning to private clients. Fitzgerald, who specialises in bespoke tax planning to private client has previously worked for Menzies, Harris Lipman, PwC and Grant Thornton.

Senior Appointments

RSM has appointed Paul Herring as Global Chief Innovation Officer. Herring joins from Grant Thornton with over 30 years’ experience in a number of senior global leadership roles relating to innovation, risk, governance and strategy.

RSM has promoted Andrew Lutton (Corporate Tax) to Director.

Sayer Vincent has appointed Gillian McKay as a Senior Tax Manager.

Rayner Essex has appointed Jason Croke as VAT Director. Croke, who has 20 year’s VAT experience, joins from Haines Watts where he was Head of VAT.

Thomas St John (TSJ) has appointed Gary Rowson as UK Tax Director. Rowson, who has over 20 years’ experience, joins from Lancaster Knox having also worked at OneE Group and Vantis.



Lizzie Hill, a Private Client Tax Partner at Deloitte, has relocated from Cambridge to the firm’s Bristol office where she will lead the tax team. Hill led the tax team in Cambridge for eight years and before this worked for nine years in the firm’s London office. Specialising in advising privately owned and family businesses, as well as individuals, families and business owners, Hill has particular expertise in transactions, including acquisitions, demergers and reorganisations.

RSM has appointed John Foskett as a Corporate Tax Partner in the Bristol office. Foskett joins RSM from Grant Thornton, prior to which he worked at PwC. Foskett has over 20 years’ experience advising mid-market businesses, from entrepreneurial standalone companies to large privately-owned groups, typically advising cross-border on inbound business expansion into the UK and to UK groups growing overseas.

Albert Goodman has relocated its Taunton office to Goodwood House on Blackbrook Park Avenue.

Senior Appointments

On 31st May 2019, Hugh Davies & Co merged with Shirley Hollis & Co. With over 30 years’ experience in accountancy practice, Shirley Hollis set up her own firm in 2011, having previously been a partner in Wilkins Kennedy in Winchester.



EY has appointed James Keane as a Tax Partner in the Birmingham office from KPMG, where he was a Tax Director.

KPMG has appointed Marc Abrams as Office Senior Partner for the East Midlands. A tax specialist, Abrams joined KPMG in 2008 and was made a Partner in 2015. He succeeds Ian Borley.

Senior Appointments

PwC has appointed Nathan Bunting as a Tax Director based in Castle Donington. A Corporate Tax specialist, he joins from KPMG, where he spent over 12 years.

Smith & Williamson has made a number of appointments in its Birmingham office. Andreas Kyprianou joins as an Assistant Tax Manager from BDO. Charlotte Cross joins as a Tax Manager, also from BDO. Meanwhile, Tammie Richards, a Tax specialist, joins as a Manager from BDO, where she spent nearly 15 years.

TaxAssist has appointed Gary Clark as a Technical Manager in the Norwich based support centre. Clark joins with 30 years’ experience, including ten years as a specialist tax manager covering personal tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax, and ten years as a proprietor of his own practice.



Begbies Traynor has acquired Yorkshire based Ernest Wilson, a business transfer agency working across a range of sectors including care homes, food outlets, hotels, restaurants and retail.



Mazars has promoted Jennifer Allison to Tax Partner in the Edinburgh office. Allison, who primarily focuses on family owned and mid-sized businesses joined Mazars in 2014.

Senior Appointments

Mazars has promoted Sean Cockburn to Tax Director based in the Edinburgh office. Cockburn joined Mazars from Ernst & Young (EY) in 2017, is a member of the Private Client team, advising families, entrepreneurs and trusts.



Fellow DFK International members Crowleys DFK and Anne Brady McQuillans DFK have announced they are to merge on 1st January 2020. The amalgamated firm, which will operate under the Crowleys DFK name, will see Anne Brady McQuillans DFK Partners Natalie Kelly and Niall Grant, along with their team of 22 staff, move to Crowleys DFK’s existing Dublin offices at College Green.



KPMG has appointed Johnny Hanna as Partner in charge in Northern Ireland. Hanna is Head of Tax for KPMG in Northern Ireland and has over 20 years’ experience advising on Irish and international tax issues. He takes over from John Hansen, who joined the firm in 2005 as Head of Restructuring and became Partner in charge in 2016. Hansen will remain as an adviser to KPMG.

KPMG has promoted Paddy Doherty to Tax Partner in their Belfast office. Doherty has over 20 years’ experience advising clients on a wide range of UK and international tax matters.


Graham Metcalf has been appointed the Group Head of Tax at EnQuest. His practice experience started in audit with Moore Stephens before transitioning into tax during his time at PwC. Graham spent 9 and a half years in the team at Shell where he was most recently Head of UK Upstream Tax before making the move.

Live Nation Entertainment have brought in Clare Hyde at a senior level as UK Tax Director. A practice background with Andersen and EY, Clare’s in-house experience has been with John Lewis and most recently she was Head of Tax at J. Murphy & Sons.

Gavin Moysey is the new Group Tax Lead at Solarcentury. Gavin has spent time in the Big 4 with KPMG and has spent time in-house with Heron International and with BBA Aviation where he enjoyed a 12-year stint.
