Trustee (Board member), Chance for Childhood

Chance for Childhood is an award-winning charity registered in the UK, with additional offices in Rwanda, Uganda and Ghana. We work to support many of Africa's most vulnerable children such as children living and working on the streets, children with disabilities, children affected by conflict and those caught up in formal and informal legal systems. The key areas of our work include inclusive education, juvenile justice and safeguarding and social protection.
We deliver programmes in partnership with visionary community leaders and governments to implement locally-relevant yet far-reaching projects that create lasting change. We also deliver programmes directly through our team of field workers and technical specialists who offer capacity development to local organisations, as well as training and advisory services.
About our vacancy
We are looking to appoint two or three new Trustees to join our global board. The Board of Trustees is accountable to the UK government's Charity Commission and Companies House while also governing our branch registrations in the countries of our operation, Rwanda, Uganda and Ghana.
Our Trustees play a central role in setting the strategic direction of our organisation, as well as holding the executive team to account to ensure we deliver our strategy effectively and in line with our governing articles.
To this end, Chance for Childhood is looking to ensure board representation in our registered countries of operation. We are seeking a national or long-term resident of Rwanda, Uganda or Ghana and we welcome applicants with a range of skills and experience including but not limited to:
Accounting /financial management: Professional accountant (ACCA/ CPA qualified or equivalent) or working knowledge of local and international financial reporting and compliance standards. Understanding of local tax legislation would be advantageous.
And / Or
Human Resources: with a background in human resource management / organisational development, and /or a working knowledge of employment legislation in their country of residence.
And / Or
Communications and marketing: experience in the development of communications strategies, digital marketing and media to help support a new and exciting phase of developing and strengthening our brand and marketing our technical advisory services.
And / Or
International /community development or social enterprise: with some prior knowledge or experience of working with children, inclusive education, early childhood development, justice reform or social protection.
Trustees are required to attend quarterly Board meetings and one annual Board Away day. We ensure video conferencing joining facilities and promote face to face engagement with our staff where possible. Board members may also be invited to join one or more of the Board's subcommittees, which requires an additional time commitment.
While this role is not remunerated, Trustees will receive reimbursement for reasonable expenses incurred during work on behalf of Chance for Childhood.
