We are looking for trustees to join our Board - people who would like to make a difference in the community we serve and have a genuine interest in the work we do.

Independent Lives is a user-led charity, working with people with support needs and with carers, to enable people to lead full, active and independent lives. Our vision is a fairer society where everyone can participate and has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. Working together we achieve real change in the lives of the people we support - so that we can all participate in our communities and have greater choice, control and freedom.

We are committed to the social model of disability. We believe that disability is caused by the way society is organised, rather than by a person's impairment. When barriers are removed, disabled people can be independent and equal in society, with choice and control over their own lives.

In order for us to realise our vision and mission, we need highly motivated and committed Trustees to provide support to ensure that we achieve our aims. As a Trustee you will use your skills and experience to guide us through exciting times, shaping our governance, contributing to our strategic future, and acting as an ambassador for all aspects of our work.

You will need to be able to make a commitment to Independent Lives, devote the necessary time, have independent judgement, and have an ability to think creatively and a willingness to speak your mind. There is no need to have trustee experience to apply, but a keen desire to support our work is essential. We are particularly interested in hearing from you if you have lived experience or caring responsibilities, and/or have professional qualifications and experience in any of the following areas:

  • HR
  • Legal
  • Fund-raising
  • Marketing and Communications

Board meetings are held quarterly, with an additional annual general meeting. We would like our Trustees to be involved; to be visible and engage with members and the public.

We offer full induction training for those selected for this position. This role is not remunerated but we will pay travel and related expenses.
