The role will include monitoring changes in tax law and policy and updating the business of notable developments. You will have the opportunity to work on this firm's responses to government consultations, including engaging with internal stakeholders to inform responses to consultations.

Flexible working

They encourage consideration of flexible ways of working, both formal and informal arrangements that allow for the best outcomes for their people and their clients.

Your role

A tax policy position is a varied role which involves a range of activities and responsibilities. The exact nature of the work to be done will largely depend on tax policy developments, but the role typically involves:

  • Monitoring and tracking changes in tax law and practice and sharing this information with the tax practice. This typically involves researching areas of change, analysing the position and writing summary tax news notes or other articles which can be accessed by the tax practice. This is a direct taxes role, this covers a broad range of taxes that apply to profits, and reliefs and incentives.
  • Working with client facing teams, either to support them in their analysis of the tax technical or policy position for them to engage with the client, or, at times, speaking with the client directly.
  • Drafting responses to consultations issued by government bodies, such as HMRC. This will involve analysing the policy proposals and any tax technical detail available and engaging with internal stakeholders for input on what policy proposals and announcements mean for their business areas. Some policy responses will involve meeting with HMRC, HM Treasury or other government bodies.
  • Drafting communications of key tax insight areas. This can be for use by the tax practice or for external dissemination to the market. Tax Policy Group adapt our approach in line with our working arrangements with different business areas, but you may be required to attend meetings and draft succinct emails, client briefing notes and slides.
  • Summarising the key facts and pertinent findings of tax cases for dissemination to the tax practice.
  • Inputting into the firm's response to fiscal events (i.e. Budgets and Statements).
  • Working effectively in diverse teams within an inclusive team culture where people are recognised for their contribution

Location:

This team operates nationally, although the majority are based in London. They operate a flexible working policy with regards to working at home or from other national offices, with presence in London as and when the need arises (e.g. for in-person meetings). On occasion, travel elsewhere in the UK may be required (e.g. to meet people in other offices or to attend courses).

Your professional experience

Essential

Tax Policy team members are expected to have:

  • A suitable professional qualification (e.g. Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA) or Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA)).
  • The ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Teamworking skills, as individuals in our team work with a range of stakeholders, both within Tax Policy Group and beyond.
  • This role involves working across direct taxes and so direct tax experience is required.
  • An ability to read, comprehend and analyse tax legislation and case law. Training will be provided where required.

Desirable

  • While this role will involve working across direct taxes, there is likely to be a high proportion of corporation tax work and so corporation tax experience is preferred.
