Ardian Case Study

THE CLIENT

Ardian are a leading independent private equity and investment company managing over $55 billion in assets. They invest in a way that responsibly creates enduring value, superior returns and shared outcomes for our investors, partners, portfolio companies and their employees. Ranking as one of the largest companies by equity raised, they were named ‘Company of the Year’ in 2013 by the readers of Private Equity International. They manage a direct portfolio of more than 130 companies, including Vinci Park, Luton Airport and SPIE. 

THE CHALLENGE

Ardian contacted Pro-Tax and partnered with us to help them recruit their first internal tax role. This was a particularly challenging position for 2 reasons: 

  • Firstly, their business model is very specialist required candidates to have significant US funds tax experience. Further they needed the gravitas and confidence to start and develop the in-house team.
  • Secondly, as Ardian did not have a tax authority at the time, they were not only looking for a recruiter who could provide suitable candidates; they also needed someone with market knowledge to provide job and salary guidance. 

OUR SOLUTION

Rather than following the contingent method, Pro-Tax partnered with Ardian to provide a retained solution. Due to the confidence in the Pro-Tax proposal, Ardian agreed and thought this would be the most effective way of working. Given the commitment from Ardian, Pro-Tax could sufficiently map the market, identify the correct candidates to approach and headhunt actively from their competitors. As part of the retained proposal, Pro-Tax provided targeted adverts on the back cover of Taxation/Tax Journal as well as other premium advertising to ensure their role stood out from the crowd and attracted the best candidate. Furthermore, Pro-Tax was able to utilize their market leading industry knowledge to guide Ardian on how to phrase their job description. The benefit to Ardian was they interviewed the best candidates (many of them passive) for their role rather than the best candidates currently available in the market. 

THE RESULT

Ardian were able to secure a great candidate who not only had direct industry experience and the technical expertise to be successful in the role but also fitted in with their company culture. Pro-Tax managed the offer process, negotiating a suitable salary package, as well as obtaining extensive references from the candidate’s previous employers. 

The candidate was very happy with his new role and both sides enjoyed a smooth and effective recruitment process from start to finish.
