Employment Tax Senior Manager

A broad, client-facing opportunity combining employment tax advisory, compliance and transaction-related work within a growing, independent tax advisory business.

Are you an experienced Employment Tax professional looking for a role that offers greater variety, client exposure and the opportunity to help shape a growing practice?

This is an opportunity to join a modern, conflict-free tax advisory business working with large and multinational organisations. With an entrepreneurial approach, a focus on high-quality advice and a commitment to technology-enabled delivery, the firm offers an environment where experienced professionals can make a genuine impact without the bureaucracy of a traditional large practice.

The Opportunity

As an Employment Tax Senior Manager, you will take a leading role across a varied portfolio of employment tax advisory and compliance engagements, with meaningful exposure to transactions and the opportunity to work alongside specialists across the wider tax practice.

You will advise major businesses on complex UK employment tax matters, including PAYE, NIC, benefits and expenses, internationally mobile employees, and IR35/off-payroll working.

A key element of the role will be supporting buy-side and sell-side transactions, identifying and assessing employment tax risks, and translating technical findings into clear, commercially relevant advice for deal teams and clients.

Working collaboratively with colleagues across corporate tax, international tax, private client and transactions, you will help deliver joined-up solutions while developing client relationships and contributing to the growth of the employment tax offering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the technical lead across a portfolio of employment tax engagements, delivering high-quality, practical advice to clients.

  • Advise large and multinational businesses on UK employment tax matters, including PAYE, National Insurance contributions, benefits and expenses, and termination payments.

  • Advise on internationally mobile employees and overseas working arrangements, including associated tax and social security implications.

  • Provide guidance on IR35 and off-payroll working, including status assessments, Status Determination Statements (SDS), contractor and supply chain governance, and risk mitigation.

  • Support the management of HMRC enquiries, investigations and remediation relating to employment tax and IR35 matters.

  • Contribute to employment tax due diligence on buy-side and sell-side transactions, identifying, assessing and quantifying potential risks and exposures.

  • Translate due diligence findings into clear commercial considerations for deal teams and clients, covering areas such as contractor engagement, overseas working, benefits, PAYE and NIC.

  • Work alongside transaction specialists on share purchase agreements (SPAs), warranty and indemnity discussions, post-deal integration and remediation.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across corporate tax, international tax, private client and other specialist teams to deliver integrated client solutions.

  • Manage and grow a portfolio of client relationships, identifying opportunities to expand existing accounts and develop new business.

  • Oversee engagement economics, including budgets, recovery rates, work in progress (WIP) and billing recommendations.

  • Support business development through proposals, pitches and the identification of new opportunities.

  • Develop Managers and junior team members, while building strong internal relationships and contributing to the wider success of the business.

  • Champion the use of AI and digital tools to improve the efficiency and quality of client delivery.

What We're Looking For

We are keen to speak with experienced Employment Tax professionals who combine strong technical knowledge with commercial awareness, a collaborative approach and the ability to build trusted client relationships.

You will ideally have:

  • CTA, ACA, ACCA, CA or another relevant professional qualification - or equivalent experience.

  • Substantial UK employment tax experience, gained within professional services or industry.

  • Strong technical expertise across PAYE, NIC, benefits, IR35/off-payroll working and internationally mobile employees.

  • Practical experience of IR35 status assessments, contractor governance and managing related HMRC enquiries.

  • Exposure to transactions and an understanding of how employment tax risks are identified, assessed and reported during due diligence. Transactions experience does not need to be your primary specialism.

  • The ability to translate complex technical issues into clear, practical and commercially focused advice.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence engaging directly with clients and senior stakeholders.

  • Experience managing client relationships, engagement budgets and portfolio profitability.

  • A track record of supporting and developing Managers and junior colleagues.

  • A collaborative, influential and entrepreneurial mindset, with the ambition to contribute to the growth of a developing practice.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to take on a broad and commercially focused role within a growing tax advisory business where you can help shape both your own career and the future of the employment tax offering.

You'll benefit from:

  • A conflict-free, pure advisory environment without the restrictions associated with audit.

  • A varied workload spanning employment tax advisory, compliance, IR35 and transaction-related work.

  • The opportunity to work with large and multinational businesses on complex, high-profile matters.

  • Close collaboration with specialists across corporate tax, international tax, private client and transactions.

  • A more entrepreneurial environment, with less hierarchy and bureaucracy.

  • The opportunity to develop client relationships, contribute to business growth and build your market profile.

  • Exposure to international projects and cross-border collaboration.

  • A technology-enabled approach, incorporating AI and digital tools to enhance client service.

  • The opportunity to influence how the practice develops while progressing your own career.
