Senior Bookkeeper

Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes | £35,000 - £40,000 | Hybrid working | Flexitime

Are you the person who can look at an unreconciled balance sheet, stay calm and work out exactly what has happened?

My client is a growing, forward-thinking accountancy practice looking to appoint two experienced Senior Bookkeepers. This is an opportunity to take ownership of a varied client portfolio, work directly with business owners and play a genuinely important role within the firm's bookkeeping team.

You will be trusted to manage your own workload and client relationships while also sharing your knowledge with less experienced colleagues. It is a proper senior bookkeeping position, offering responsibility, variety and progression rather than simply processing transactions all day.

The Role

You will manage the day-to-day bookkeeping requirements for a portfolio of clients, ensuring their financial records remain accurate, complete and up to date.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the bookkeeping requirements of a varied client portfolio
  • Processing journals and maintaining records through to trial balance
  • Preparing and reviewing VAT returns
  • Completing bank and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Reconciling VAT, credit cards, receivables, payables, payroll, CIS, intercompany balances and loans
  • Processing supplier bills, employee expenses and payments
  • Undertaking credit control
  • Supporting the preparation of year-end accounts
  • Responding to client queries and providing practical bookkeeping support
  • Building strong, long-term relationships with clients
  • Helping clients make effective use of Xero and other cloud-accounting systems
  • Facilitating and troubleshooting software integrations
  • Supporting and developing junior members of the bookkeeping team
  • Managing competing assignments and ensuring deadlines are met

About You

You will already be an experienced bookkeeper within a UK accountancy practice and be comfortable managing multiple clients, deadlines and priorities.

To be considered, you will need:

  • At least five years' hands-on bookkeeping experience
  • Previous experience working within a UK accountancy practice
  • Experience managing a portfolio of clients
  • Strong bookkeeping knowledge, including journals, reconciliations and preparation through to trial balance
  • Strong experience preparing and reviewing VAT returns
  • Confidence using Xero and cloud-based accounting systems
  • Experience completing detailed balance sheet reconciliations
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • The confidence to communicate directly with clients
  • A proactive, organised and solutions-focused approach

AAT Level 4, Sage or QuickBooks experience and previous involvement in training junior bookkeepers would be advantageous, although they are not essential.

Hybrid Working

New starters spend their first month working from the Stony Stratford office. This provides time for a thorough induction, training and the opportunity to get to know the wider team.

After the first month, the usual working pattern is three days in the office and two days working from home. The specific days are agreed with your line manager to ensure the arrangement works for both you and the team.

What's on Offer?

  • Salary of £35,000 - £40,000
  • Three office days and two home-working days after the first month
  • Flexible working hours
  • Annual bonus
  • 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Option to purchase five additional days of annual leave
  • Enhanced pension contribution
  • Private health insurance
  • BUPA Cash Plan
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Death in service cover
  • Professional subscriptions paid
  • Electric vehicle scheme
  • Genuine progression opportunities within a growing firm

This role would suit an experienced practice bookkeeper who wants greater ownership, more client contact and the opportunity to become an influential member of a developing team.

If that sounds like the right next step, apply today for a confidential conversation.

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK without sponsorship.
