It’s no secret recruiters have bad reputation, we’re somewhere down there with estate agents. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve heard and experienced some absolute horror stories, and I’ve been in situations where someone has asked ‘what I do as a job’ and answering, “I’m a recruiter” has openly led to eyerolling, or a “You don’t look or seem like a recruiter”.
… This makes me think what do recruiters ‘look’ or ‘seem’ like? … Rhetorical question, I can answer that…typically the generalisation is a lemon & herb Wolf of Wall Street type... which is just fascinating.
Anyway, after working alongside some true hero behaviour in the recruitment space (none of whom have been anything like when you order Jordan Belfort from Temu) I wanted to champion my fellow consultative buds and explain why working with a recruiter, a particularly good one, can do you a real solid when it comes to exploring the market.
- Firstly, how many of us can rustle up a CV or a professional profile from scratch? Amongst having to fit in doing it around life happening, it’s daunting, and looking at a blank Word document and having to recite what you’ve been up to for the last decade is no mean feat. Enter the procrastination stage, putting it off, and holding up landing yourself that dream partnership prospect. A recruiter will help coach/ mentor you through the entire process; from tedious admin, through the interview process, all the way to the offer stage (we’re your professional career cheerleaders if you will).
- We have a deep understanding of the market; we know secrets and have extensive professional networks. If you're seeking a specific role or trying to get your foot in the door at a certain firm, we may be able to leverage our connections to help you out. In addition to this, our job is to watch and evaluate the market and we’re happy to give you a valuable overview of the landscape and put together a bespoke poa.
- The whole stressful debacle can be a time-consuming process. It’s almost a job in itself. We’ll help you streamline this; we’ve already established relationships with partners and hiring managers and can move through the hiring process more quickly than you might be able to on your own. This can be crucial if you're seeking a faster transition or looking for a role within a particular timeframe.
- We’re here for the good, the bad, and the ugly; we can help you evaluate opportunities without emotional attachment to a particular outcome, and we’re happy to negotiate the awkward bits for you. We’re here to advocate for you throughout the hiring process.
- Whilst we might not be able to find you the perfect option right now, we’re big on longevity, we’ll consult you and maintain a relationship with you. We’ll keep you in mind for future opportunities and continue to provide career advice for long-term career growth.
Lastly, a recruiter offers a level of confidentiality that can be invaluable, which is particularly useful if you're not actively job hunting. Even if you're content in your current role, you may still want to explore the market and stay aware of potential opportunities (which I’d encourage). We’re able to approach potential firms on your behalf without the risk to your current situation, which can be tricky to navigate by yourself.
