CTA Results Day: You're Qualified (YAY!)

...What Happens Next?

Article Background

If you're reading this ahead of CTA results day, you're probably experiencing a mixture of excitement, anticipation and, let's be honest, at least a few nerves.

For most people, CTA isn't a qualification you knock out in a few months. It's usually three years or more of studying, revising, sitting exams and balancing it all alongside a busy tax career. If you're approaching results day, you're finally nearing the end of that journey.

While results day itself may still be a few weeks away, it's never too early to start thinking about what this qualification could mean for your career.

CTA qualification is more than just another exam result. It's often the moment when new opportunities, career progression and future earning potential come into sharper focus.

As a tax recruiter, one of the most common conversations I have with newly qualified candidates is about understanding their options. Some realise they're exactly where they want to be, while others discover opportunities they hadn't previously considered.

So, assuming results day brings the outcome you're hoping for (fingers crossed!), what should you be thinking about during those first few months as a newly qualified CTA?

Why CTA Qualification Changes the Conversation

Most people spend the run-up to CTA qualification focused on one thing: passing the exams. Completely understandable. Career planning, salary benchmarking and long-term progression often take a back seat when you're balancing revision with client work.

Once the exams are behind you, the focus naturally shifts to what's next. Qualification is often the first opportunity to take stock and ask:

What do I want my career to look like now?

You'll likely find yourself considering:

  • Whether your current firm offers the progression opportunities you want
  • If you're gaining enough advisory exposure
  • Whether you would benefit from a larger platform or a more entrepreneurial environment
  • What your market value looks like as a newly qualified CTA
  • Whether you want to specialise or broaden your experience

What Should You Do in Your First Six Months as a Newly Qualified CTA?

1. Understand What's Out There

One thing I always tell newly qualified CTAs is that you don't have to be actively looking to be curious about the market.

Qualification is often the point where opportunities start opening up that may not have been available 12 months ago. Whether that's a promotion internally, a move into advisory work, joining a larger firm or even considering your first in-house opportunity, it's worth understanding what's available.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I learning and developing?
  • Is there a clear route to promotion?
  • Am I gaining exposure to the type of work I enjoy?
  • Do I feel valued and supported?

You may discover you're exactly where you need to be. Equally, you may realise there are opportunities out there that align more closely with your long-term goals.

2. Understand Your Market Value

CTA qualification can significantly increase your attractiveness to employers.

Many firms actively target newly qualified professionals because they combine strong technical knowledge with several years of practical experience.

Even if you're not actively looking to move, understanding the current market can be incredibly valuable. Salary benchmarks, progression opportunities and hiring trends can vary considerably across London firms.

One conversation with a recruiter can often give you a much clearer understanding of where you sit in the market and what opportunities could be open to you.

3. Think Beyond Compliance

Many tax professionals discover that qualification gives them the confidence to explore different areas of tax.

You may find yourself interested in:

  • Corporate Tax Advisory
  • Transactions Tax
  • International Tax
  • Transfer Pricing
  • Employment Tax
  • Private Client Advisory
  • Tax Investigations
  • In-House Group Tax

The first six months post qualification can be an excellent time to explore where your interests and strengths naturally align.

4. Build Your Professional Network

CTA qualification places you within a highly respected community of tax professionals.

Conversations with colleagues, former classmates, mentors and recruiters can often provide valuable insight into different career paths and opportunities that may not be visible through job adverts alone.

5. Create a Three-Year Career Plan

Not every newly qualified CTA needs to make an immediate move.

However, every newly qualified CTA should have a clear understanding of where they want to be in the next three years.

Consider:

  • Do you want to become a Manager or Senior Manager?
  • Do you aspire to Partner?
  • Are you interested in moving in-house?
  • Would you like to specialise in a particular area of tax?

Having a direction of travel can help ensure that your current role is supporting your longer-term ambitions.

CTA Results Support & Webinars

Whether results day brings the outcome you're hoping for or not, you're not on your own.

If results day doesn't go your way, don't write yourself off.

CTA is tough. Really tough. Many of the successful Tax Partners, Directors and Senior Managers we work with didn't pass every exam first time.

Take a few days to reset, clear your head and remember how far you've already come. Then, when you're ready, join one of our CTA results webinars, hear from experienced tutors and start planning your next attempt.

A failed exam is a setback, not a career-defining moment.

At Pro-Tax, we run CTA results webinars with Ali, one of our Directors, alongside Nitin, an experienced CTA tutor. These sessions are designed to help candidates make sense of their results, understand their options and think clearly about next steps – whether that's progression, planning your next move or re-strategising your study approach.

The date for the next webinar has not yet been released. These sessions tend to fill up quickly, so if you'd like to attend, please register your interest by emailing lauren.mcloughlin@pro-tax.co.uk and I'll make sure you're one of the first to hear when the date is released.

The Bottom Line

CTA qualification is a major achievement, but it's also the start of a new chapter.

Whether you choose to stay where you are or explore opportunities elsewhere, now is the ideal time to understand your options and ensure you're on the right path to achieve your long-term goals.
