Didn't Get the CTA Result You Wanted?

...Here's What Happens Next

Article Background

So, you didn't get the CTA result you were hoping for. What now?

First things first: take a breath.

The CTA is widely regarded as one of the most demanding professional qualifications in the tax industry. Failing a paper doesn't define your ability as a tax professional, and it certainly doesn't mean your career ambitions are over.

In fact, many of the most successful tax professionals I've worked with have experienced exam setbacks at some point in their careers.

If Your Firm Has a Strict Exam Policy

Some firms have clear policies around CTA exam progress and study support. If you're worried about what your result might mean for your current role, try not to jump to conclusions.

I've seen firms take different approaches with strong performers, including:

  • Allowing additional attempts under revised study arrangements
  • Continuing employment while alternative qualification routes are discussed
  • Providing flexibility around future exam sittings
  • Refocusing development towards practical tax experience

Every firm is different, but it's always worth having an open conversation before assuming the worst.

The Biggest Misconception: "No Other Firm Will Hire Me"

One of the most common things I hear after CTA results are released is:

"I've failed a CTA exam so nobody else will want me."

This simply isn't true.

Most hiring managers understand how difficult the CTA is. They are far more interested in your technical ability, client skills, commercial awareness and overall potential than a single exam result.

Yes, some employers have strict qualification policies. But many others recognise that good tax professionals are built through experience as well as exams.

Consider Broadening Your Experience

Sometimes a setback can create opportunities you may not have considered previously.

If you've spent the early part of your career in a large firm, moving to a mid-tier practice, boutique, or specialist advisory firm can give you exposure to:

  • Wider client interaction
  • More hands-on advisory work
  • Greater responsibility earlier in your career
  • Exposure to areas of tax you may not have seen before

That breadth of experience can be incredibly valuable, regardless of whether you ultimately remain in practice or move into industry.

Thinking About Industry?

CTA-qualified professionals are highly sought after in industry, but qualification isn't always a prerequisite for making the move.

Many in-house tax teams value:

  • Strong technical foundations
  • Practical tax experience
  • Stakeholder management skills
  • The ability to solve complex problems

A failed exam doesn't erase any of those qualities.

In fact, if you're unsure whether practice is right for you long-term, this may be the perfect opportunity to consider what type of tax career you really want.

Still Determined to Qualify?

Good.

A disappointing result doesn't mean you won't become CTA qualified.

There are plenty of firms that genuinely invest in their people and understand that everyone learns differently.

Many offer:

  • Tailored study support
  • Flexible resit arrangements
  • Mentoring from recently qualified colleagues
  • Realistic expectations around balancing work and study

One exam result rarely tells the full story.

Partnership and Leadership Are Still Possible

Another misconception is that failing an exam means senior leadership roles are out of reach.

I can confidently say that some of the strongest Tax Directors, Partners and Heads of Tax I've worked with have failed exams during their careers.

What differentiated them wasn't a perfect exam record.

It was resilience.

They learned from setbacks, adapted their approach, and carried on.

That's often what employers value most.

In Summary

If today's CTA result wasn't what you hoped for, remember this:

Your career is not over.

You haven't lost your technical ability.

You haven't lost your experience.

And you haven't lost your future opportunities.

You've simply encountered a setback that thousands of successful tax professionals have faced before you.

Take some time to process the result, speak with trusted mentors, and consider your options carefully. There are almost always more opportunities available than you initially realise.

And if you'd like an informal conversation about the market, potential career options, or firms that can support your ongoing development, I'm always happy to help.
