Article Background

I speak with auditors at all stages of their careers, but one theme comes up time and again: what does it really take to make Partner?

I spend a lot of time speaking with individuals who are working towards that goal. It is one of the most significant milestones in an audit career, and understandably, one that comes with a lot of questions.

What I often say at the outset is this. Moving into an Audit Partner role is not simply a promotion. It represents a fundamental shift in mindset, responsibility, and impact. It is the point where your focus moves beyond delivering work into shaping direction, leading people, and creating long term value for both your clients and your firm.

For those aiming to make that transition, there are a few areas I believe really matter.

Reaching Partner level is a defining moment, but technical expertise alone is not enough. The individuals who succeed are those who broaden their focus and develop a more rounded skillset.

1. Master audit quality and technical excellence
As a Partner, you carry ultimate responsibility for audit quality. That means delivering consistently high standards, identifying and managing risk effectively, and staying up to date with evolving regulations and accounting standards. You are also expected to operate as a Responsible Individual (RI), demonstrating accountability across your portfolio.

2. Lead people and build strong teams
Your impact as a Partner is shaped by the teams around you. It is important to invest time in developing others, delegating effectively, and creating an environment where people can perform at their best. Strong leadership is not just about oversight, it is about building capability and trust.

3. Build meaningful client relationships
Clients expect more than technical delivery. They are looking for insight, perspective, and a trusted adviser. Taking the time to understand their business, anticipate challenges, and offer proactive support is key to building long term relationships.

4. Think commercially and contribute to the wider business
Partnership brings a broader responsibility to contribute to the growth and direction of the firm. That includes identifying opportunities to develop existing client relationships, winning new work, and understanding how the firm operates commercially. It is important to start thinking beyond your own portfolio and consider the bigger picture.

5. Focus on your own effectiveness
The demands of Partnership are significant, so managing your time, energy, and priorities is essential. Investing in your own development and building sustainable ways of working will put you in a strong position when the opportunity arises.

Stepping up to Audit Partner is a journey rather than a single moment. In my experience, those who make the transition successfully are the ones who combine technical strength with leadership, commercial awareness, and the ability to build lasting relationships.

If you are working towards Partnership, my advice is simple. Start thinking and acting like a Partner before the title arrives.
